In a significant boost to its agricultural export basket, Pakistan has finalised an agreement to export 1,00,000 tonnes of rice to Bangladesh, marking one of the largest bilateral grain deals between the two neighbouring countries in recent years. The move comes as Bangladesh looks to stabilise domestic supplies and curb price volatility triggered by erratic weather and lower local output.
According to trade officials in Islamabad, the deal covers both IRRI and aromatic rice varieties, which will be shipped in multiple consignments over the next few months. Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce confirmed that procurement and logistics have already been initiated through state-run trading entities and accredited private exporters. The shipments are expected to start immediately, ensuring timely availability for Bangladesh’s domestic market.
The development comes at a time when Pakistan’s rice sector is witnessing a rebound in production following improved water availability and favourable climatic conditions. Exporters believe that the Bangladesh order will not only strengthen trade relations but also provide much-needed momentum to Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings at a time of economic pressure.
For Bangladesh, the import deal is aligned with its strategy to maintain adequate buffer stocks and prevent retail price spikes that have affected consumers over the past few months. Officials in Dhaka stated that the country is diversifying its import sources to ensure consistent supply and avoid overdependence on any single market.
Industry analysts say that the agreement signals a renewed phase of agricultural cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh, potentially opening doors for future collaborations in food security and regional trade.
