Plant-based diets seen to transform vegetarianism as a global food trend

Nandita Vijayasimha, Bengaluru
Plant-based diets are witnessing a rise and is reshaping the way food is consumed. Adapting to plant-based diet has become a worldwide phenomenon and the food industry itself has undergone a transformative journey, according to Gopi Chand Cherukuri, co- founder, Mr. Philly's, which is an all–American pop cuisine brand food business operator.

"This inclination to vegetarianism is a  conscious shift as consumers worldwide are looking for healthier food choices. India is not an exception to this global trend," he added.

Quoting the IMARC report he said the global plant-based food market was valued at $50.32 billion in 2023 and is projected to surge to $95.92 billion by 2028, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.9%.

One of the primary reasons for the shift to vegetarian and plant-based food is growing concerns for personal health, environmental sustainability and animal welfare. Plant-based diets are rich in protein and less of fats. These meals are not only protein heavy but also contribute to weight management and lowers your risk of diseases like hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers like colon cancer. A diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and plant-based proteins will help you stay away from such diseases, Cherukuri told FnB News in an email.

"There is environmental sustainability with vegetarianism. It plays an important role in mitigating climate change and conserving natural resources. Today, with the growing global warming, vegetarianism helps in reducing ecological footprint as the industry is a significant contributor to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water consumption," he said.

Opting for vegetarianism is a conscious and an ethical consideration which individuals are looking for. Just like us humans, animals also have natural needs even they feel pain and happiness. A vegetarian lifestyle offers a way to support animal welfare by choosing food sources that do not contribute to the exploitation and mistreatment of animals, noted Cherukuri.

Oxford Martin School researchers have found a global switch to diets that rely less on meat and more on fruit and vegetables could save up to 8 million lives by 2050, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two thirds, and lead to healthcare-related savings. It could also avoid climate-related damages of $1.5 trillion. Also BofA Securities report  address that vegan meat market will be valued at over $40 billion by the end of 2025.

"Opting for vegetarianism is a lifestyle change for people who are meat eaters all their life but slowly and gradually it becomes a habit. Vegetarianism has evolved far beyond a simple dietary trend. In fact, it has become a significant movement transforming the global food landscape," he pointed out.

As more individuals become aware of the health benefits, environmental impact, and ethical implications of plant-based diets, vegetarianism is gaining increasing traction. This shift is driving innovation across the food industry, encouraging sustainable practices, and influencing societal attitudes toward food consumption. "As the movement grows, it presents a hopeful future where food is not only healthier and more eco-friendly but also rooted in principles of compassion and ethical responsibility," said the co-founder of Mr. Philly's.
