The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, a central sector initiative launched in February 2019, has solidified its role as a crucial financial lifeline for farmers across India, successfully transferring over Rs 4.09 lakh crore through 21 installments since its inception. This achievement, shared by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ramnath Thakur, in the Rajya Sabha, underscores the scheme's success in providing direct, transparent financial assistance.

Under the PM-KISAN scheme, eligible farmers with cultivable land receive Rs 6,000 per year in three equal installments. The funds are transferred directly into their Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts via the direct benefit transfer (DBT) mode, ensuring zero intermediary involvement and maintaining high transparency.

Multiple impact evaluation studies have confirmed the scheme's profound effect on the rural economy:

    • Boosted Economic Growth: A study by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) found that the funds have significantly contributed to rural economic growth, alleviated credit constraints, and increased farmers' investments in critical agricultural inputs. It also improved their risk-taking capacity for more productive investments.
    • Enhanced Productivity and Income: The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog reported that over 92% of beneficiary farmers utilized the financial aid for essential agricultural inputs like seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Critically, approximately 85% of beneficiary farmers reported an increase in agricultural income and a reduced reliance on informal credit during emergencies.
    • High Satisfaction: Surveys conducted via Kisan Call Centres (KCC) show that more than 92% of beneficiaries are satisfied with the scheme.

The PM-KISAN scheme's reliance on a farmer-centric digital infrastructure and the Aadhaar-enabled payment system has drastically reduced transaction failures, positioning it as an essential pillar of the country's social security framework and significantly contributing to Sustainable Development Goals related to poverty reduction and food security.
