The Delhi Police Crime Branch has dismantled an illegal fake spice manufacturing operation in Old Delhi’s historic Khari Baoli market, the largest wholesale spice hub in Asia.
According to reports, acting on precise intelligence, a specialised enforcement team raided the ground floor of a facility in the Naya Bans locality. The operation resulted in the seizure of approximately 802 kg of spurious ground spices and toxic raw materials.
Officials from the Department of Food Safety later joined the venue to collect product samples for laboratory analysis.
The reports added that investigators revealed the manufacturing unit was systematically churning out counterfeit versions of essential kitchen staples, including turmeric, coriander, garam masala, amchoor, and red chilli powders.
To maximise profit margins, the operators blended low-grade substances, pulverised chilli stalks, coriander stems, and coarse rice fragments into the mix. Most alarmingly, hazardous, non-edible industrial dyes were introduced to mimic the vibrant, natural colours of authentic spices.
A 31-year-old individual was arrested at the facility. Authorities confirmed that the toxic, counterfeit inventory was actively being distributed to unsuspecting vendors across the wider Delhi-NCR region.
A criminal case has been formally registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating and selling noxious food.
