Premium restaurant delivery is emerging as an important part of festive hosting in India, with consumers increasingly opting for restaurant-quality meals to celebrate Diwali at home with family and friends. Traditionally associated with elaborate home-cooked spreads, festive dining is now expanding to include curated offerings from premium restaurants, transforming food delivery from an everyday convenience into an occasion-led experience.
According to industry estimates cited in Redseer’s State of India’s Food Services Market 2026, online delivery accounts for around 11 per cent of India’s food-services market, with its share projected to reach nearly 20 per cent over the next five years. The trend also reflects a shift in consumer preferences, with orders increasingly extending beyond quick and affordable meals to premium restaurant offerings for home gatherings and special occasions.
Prashant Issar, Founder of Ishaara and Managing Director, Bellona Hospitality, said restaurants need to view delivery as an extension of their hospitality experience rather than merely another sales channel. He noted that customers ordering multiple dishes for family dinners or social gatherings are essentially relying on the restaurant to support their hosting experience. This places greater emphasis on food quality, timely delivery, packaging and consistency with the restaurant's dining experience.
For premium restaurants, adapting to delivery requires careful menu planning based on how individual dishes travel. While curries may retain their quality during transit, breads can lose their texture, dumplings require careful handling and pasta may continue cooking after being packed. Restaurants are therefore making adjustments such as modifying cooking times, packing sauces separately and excluding dishes that may not retain their intended quality during transportation.
The focus is also shifting from delivery speed to reliability, particularly for larger orders intended for gatherings. Consumers hosting family and friends place greater importance on food arriving on time and maintaining the chef's intended taste and presentation than on receiving it within a few minutes.
Delivery is also becoming a discovery platform for premium restaurants, allowing new customers to experience their offerings at home before visiting their outlets. Existing diners, meanwhile, are increasingly using restaurant delivery services when hosting gatherings.
Issar believes that restaurants will need to view dine-in and delivery as interconnected experiences as consumer preferences evolve. He added that the responsibility of hospitality now extends beyond the restaurant's premises, with restaurants expected to deliver an experience that reflects their identity even when the meal is served at a customer's home.
As festive and occasion-led ordering gains traction, premium restaurant delivery is expected to play a growing role in India's food-services market, creating opportunities for brands to extend their hospitality experience beyond traditional dine-in formats.
