The Punjab Government has announced the launch of a massive statewide food safety drive aimed at ensuring ‘Shudh Ann (pure food)’ reaches every kitchen across the state.
As per reports, the Punjab Health Minister, Dr. Balbir Singh, said that this 15-day intensive drive, scheduled from April 1 to April 15, marks a significant escalation in the government’s battle against food adulteration.
Earlier, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann directed the State Health Ministry to ensure food safety in the state. Subsequently, a high level meeting was chaired by the Health Minister which mandated a high-tech, multi-departmental coordination that goes beyond routine inspections.
The administration is going to extensively use specialised mobile laboratories equipped to provide on-the-spot testing for daily essentials like milk, ghee, paneer, and spices. These vans will move through every district, allowing citizens to bring samples from their own kitchens to verify their purity, fostering a collaborative approach to public health.
The reports added that the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has been tasked with conducting targeted studies into heavy metal contamination in vegetables grown near industrial areas, as well as checking for antibiotic residues in poultry, meat, and eggs.
Meanwhile, the officials say that the data derived from the studies will be helpful in policy interventions by the government with respect to food safety and regulatory decisions.
