Quick commerce platforms in the country have been asked to strictly follow food safety rules including those pertaining to shelf life.
The platforms were called upon for a meeting at FSSAI headquarters on a complaint by CAIT (Confederation of All India Traders) and AICPDF (All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation) where more than 100 representatives of such platforms like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart and Zepto, which trade in quick commerce, were reportedly present.
According to Shankar Thakkar, national secretary, CAIT, FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) has told all the companies and sellers to compulsorily follow the expiry date regulation or face action.
FSSAI has also warned such companies against wrong labelling of food products.
Further, the apex food regulator has asked such platforms for mandatory medical examination of the delivery persons to prevent any possible infection/contamination during delivery of food.
Apart from this, FoSTaC (Food Safety Training and Certification) training certificate has also been made mandatory for the delivery persons.
According to 'Food Safety and Standards Amendment Regulations 2020', sellers and platforms are allowed to sell only those products whose shelf life (time of being usable) is at least 30% or 45 days left.
Thakkar further said, "We welcome the action taken by FSSAI by taking cognizance of the complaint of the organisations. But to make these companies complying rules, a separate monitoring system should be formed which keeps an eye on such platforms and takes strict action if required so that the tampering with the health of consumers can be stopped."
