The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has released the latest data on Rabi crop sowing for the 2025–26 season, reporting a robust expansion in coverage compared with the previous year. As of December 26, 2025 the total area sown under Rabi crops has reached 614.30 lakh hectares, showing an increase of 6.87 lakh hectares over the corresponding period last year, according to official figures.
The growth is backed by notable expansion in several key crop categories, reflecting farmers’ confidence and favourable sowing conditions across many states. Pulses recorded a significant rise of 3.65 lakh hectares, while gram alone showed a robust increase of 4.66 lakh hectares compared to the same period last year. These gains suggest stronger coverage under protein-rich crops, which play an important role in ensuring nutritional security.
Among cereals, wheat maintained steady progress with a marginal rise in acreage, while there was also a healthy uptick in rice coverage. Coarse cereals including maize contributed to the overall advance, signalling balanced diversification across staple crops. Oilseeds too witnessed gains, with rapeseed and mustard acreage increasing by more than a lakh hectares.
The expansion in Rabi coverage comes at a time when adequate soil moisture and improved access to quality inputs have supported sowing activities in most regions. Farmers and agriculture experts attribute the positive trend to proactive state-level extension support and timely availability of seeds and fertilisers.
Smaller pulses such as lentil and moongbean also showed incremental gains, while other crops like urdbean and lathyrus maintained stable acreage. These developments reflect a broader strengthening of the Rabi cropping pattern, which is critical for India’s foodgrain stocks and overall crop output.
Overall, the latest Rabi sowing data indicates that India’s agricultural sowing operations are progressing well, signalling optimism for production prospects ahead of the harvest season. The government continues to monitor weather conditions and provide necessary support to farmers to sustain this growth trajectory.
