A delegation of trade leaders met with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Rail Bhavan to discuss transforming India's railway freight system into a more efficient, transparent, and accountable network.
During the interaction, Shankar Thakkar, national secretary of CAIT and National President of the All India Edible Oil Traders Federation, urged the Ministry to formulate a dedicated policy for rail-based edible oil transport.
Highlighting recent concerns shared by the Prime Minister regarding rising edible oil prices, Thakkar noted that India imports over 60% of its edible oil consumption and utilising cost-effective rail transport from ports instead of costlier road networks could significantly lower retail prices for consumers.
Thakkar also requested policy interventions to revive bulk rice transport via rakes from southern states to Mumbai—a system that has stagnated due to past policy shifts.
Led by Praveen Khandelwal, MP from Chandni Chowk and national secretary general of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), the delegation included representatives from 15 states, alongside Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar and senior ministry officials.
?Meanwhile, minister Vaishnaw assured the delegation that their practical suggestions on infrastructure, parcel service expansion, and digital simplification would be reviewed.
