Rapid organised retail expansion propels namkeen market

Anurag More, Mumbai
India's namkeen market is poised for robust growth, with the market expected to expand by US$ 4.89 billion between 2025 and 2030, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.2 per cent, according to a report by Technavio. The growth is being fuelled by the rapid expansion of organised retail in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, rising disposable incomes, evolving consumer preferences, and the increasing penetration of digital commerce.

The report highlights that India's savoury snacks industry is undergoing a significant transformation as consumers increasingly seek healthier, premium, and authentic snacking options. Manufacturers are responding by investing in innovative formulations, clean-label products, advanced packaging technologies, and efficient supply chain systems. Companies are also strengthening logistics capabilities, including cold-chain infrastructure for perishable food products, to ensure product quality and freshness across distribution channels.

Commenting on the industry's outlook, Aakash Kandoi, Managing Director, Jagdish Farshan, said the Indian namkeen market is projected to grow at over 10 per cent CAGR through 2030, supported by modern trade, quick commerce, and the growing global acceptance of Indian snacks. He noted that consumers are increasingly looking beyond taste, demanding premium ingredients, cleaner labels, innovative flavours, and convenient packaging that aligns with modern FMCG standards.

Kandoi also identified transit retail as a major growth opportunity. With India's expanding network of highways, airports, and tourism infrastructure, travellers are increasingly opting for trusted and hygienic branded snacks over unorganised alternatives. Jagdish Farshan is strengthening its presence at airports and along key travel corridors, including the Delhi-Mumbai Highway, to capitalise on this trend while introducing authentic Gujarati snacks to a wider audience.

Founded in 1938 in Vadodara, Jagdish Farshan continues to preserve its heritage recipes while adapting to changing consumer preferences. The company has expanded beyond traditional namkeens into premium sweets, bakery products, frozen foods, ready-to-eat meals, sugar-free offerings, and clean-label snacks. It has also introduced India's first avocado oil-based namkeen range and products inspired by global flavours while retaining the authenticity of Gujarati cuisine.

The company is pursuing an omnichannel growth strategy by expanding its retail footprint across India, strengthening exports, and enhancing its digital presence through its direct-to-consumer platform as well as quick commerce and e-commerce platforms, including Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, Amazon, and BigBasket. According to the company, online sales have grown by nearly 30 per cent, reflecting the rising consumer preference for purchasing premium regional snacks online.

Internationally, Jagdish Farshan exports to more than 25 countries and has established exclusive retail outlets in the United States and Canada. The company continues to invest in internationally recognised quality standards, advanced packaging technologies, and manufacturing capabilities to support further global expansion.

Packaging has also emerged as a strategic differentiator. Jagdish Farshan has adopted Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) alongside advanced German and Italian processing equipment to enhance product freshness, extend shelf life, and maintain quality without artificial preservatives. The company is also evaluating more sustainable and recyclable packaging formats as part of its long-term manufacturing roadmap.

Despite the favourable outlook, the industry continues to face challenges, including intense competition from the fragmented unorganised sector, rising raw material costs, and increasing consumer expectations around food safety, nutritional value, and ingredient transparency. Maintaining consistency in taste and quality while scaling operations across domestic and international markets remains a key focus for organised manufacturers.

Looking ahead, Jagdish Farshan aims to achieve Rs 1,000 crore in topline revenue over the next three to five years through product innovation, retail expansion, exports, and digital growth. The company plans to strengthen its retail network beyond Gujarat, expand along the Delhi-Mumbai Highway, accelerate e-commerce sales, and build on its international presence.

Industry experts believe that as premiumisation, health-conscious consumption, and omnichannel retail continue to reshape the Indian snacks sector, organised brands that successfully combine traditional recipes with modern manufacturing, innovation, and convenience will be well positioned to lead the next phase of growth.
