The Food Safety Department of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has warned the public against using ready-to-cook food products. The advisory by Kerala FSD came after a lab analysis found certain preservatives content, in excessive amounts, in the packed ready to cook products.
This warning is based on testing of random samples collected by the officers from the Food Safety Department across the state of Kerala.
Ready-to-cook products like chapati, porotta and pathiri have been found to contain preservatives like sorbic acid and benzoic acid, in excess to the prescribed limit.
A R Ajayakumar, Commissioner of the Food Safety Department has said that the people were encouraged to approach food testing laboratories around the city in case they suspect contamination or adulteration in the quality of the ready-to-cook food product.
The Commissioner informed that food testing labs have reported excessive use of sorbic acid and benzoic acid in most of the ready-to-cook chapati, porotta and pathiri packets that are available in the market.
The Commissioner also informed that consumers can check the quality of a food product at the regional Government Analytical Food Testing Laboratories.
