India and Canada’s Saskatchewan province have explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in agriculture, focusing on trade, research, farm technology and capacity building. The discussions took place during a meeting between Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and Scott Moe, Premier of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, held at Krishi Bhawan.

During the meeting, both sides discussed enhancing collaboration in agricultural research, technology transfer, modern equipment and advanced farming practices. The talks also highlighted opportunities to deepen agri-trade relations between India and Saskatchewan, which is known globally for its strong agricultural ecosystem.

Chouhan emphasised that Saskatchewan has been a reliable partner for India in supplying key agricultural inputs, particularly potash, which plays a crucial role in improving soil fertility and crop productivity. He also welcomed the proposal to establish a Canada–India Pulse Protein Centre of Excellence, aimed at boosting research and innovation in the pulse sector.

Scott Moe noted that the relationship between Saskatchewan and India has continued to grow stronger in recent years, supported by shared interests in agriculture, food security and trade. He expressed confidence that deeper collaboration would create new opportunities for farmers, agri-businesses and research institutions in both regions.

The discussions also covered potential partnerships in areas such as farm mechanisation, knowledge sharing and capacity building for farmers and agricultural professionals. Both sides acknowledged the importance of technology-driven farming practices and innovation in improving agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and other government departments attended the meeting. These included Atish Chandra, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, and M. L. Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, along with representatives from the Department of Fertilizers and the Ministry of External Affairs.

The meeting underscored the growing importance of international cooperation in agriculture, with both sides expressing commitment to further strengthening India–Saskatchewan ties in agri-trade, research and sustainable farming practices.
