Serious poisoning incidents grip UP, leaving over 85 people hospitalised

A series of serious food poisoning incidents has gripped several districts in western Uttar Pradesh, leaving over 85 people hospitalised after consuming contaminated buckwheat flour, commonly known as 'kuttu ka atta,' during the Navratri festival.

As per reports, the outbreak was reported across Baghpat, Bijnor, and Bulandshahr, where residents fell ill shortly after consuming their evening meals to break their ritual fast.

In Bulandshahr, nearly 40 people required emergency medical attention, while Bijnor saw dozens more admitted to local health centres.

?In response to the crisis, the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has launched a massive crackdown on local markets. Preliminary investigations suggest the poisoning was caused by either expired stock or adulterated flour mixed with harmful substitutes to meet high festival demand.

Reports added that authorities have already seized over 400 kg of contaminated flour and sent samples for laboratory testing. Legal action is being initiated against wholesalers and shopkeepers suspected of selling the tainted products.

State health departments have issued a high alert, advising the public to exercise extreme caution when purchasing fasting ingredients and to report any vendors, that they suspect, immediately.
