The South Indian tea industry has launched a strategic push to expand its footprint in Gujarat, aiming to introduce and promote South Indian tea varieties in a state traditionally dominated by northern tea blends. A delegation of tea traders and industry representatives recently in Ahmedabad engaged with over 300 tea buyers, distributors and trade partners to pitch their products and build market linkages.
The initiative, led by the South India Tea Promotion Group, seeks to raise awareness of the diversity and flavour profiles of teas grown and blended in the southern states, including unique CTC and orthodox varieties that often differ from the mainstream flavours popular in Gujarat. Gujarat’s tea market has historically been driven by brands with strong north and west India presence, but industry leaders see significant untapped potential for South Indian teas in the region.
During the outreach event, tea tastings, product demonstrations and trade meetings are planned to help local buyers better understand the quality and versatility of southern teas and explore supply partnerships with producers and packers from states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Organisers expect that such direct engagement will accelerate buyer interest and lead to expanded distribution across Gujarat’s modern trade and retail channels.
Industry analysts say that as India’s overall tea consumption continues to rise, regions like Gujarat represent important growth corridors for producers seeking to diversify their markets beyond traditional strongholds in the east and south. Branding efforts that highlight the distinctive taste, aroma and provenance of South Indian teas are key to capturing the attention of Gujarat consumers, who are increasingly open to new beverage experiences.
The Gujarat engagement follows similar tea promotion drives in major markets such as Hyderabad and Mumbai, underscoring the industry’s broader strategy to deepen market penetration and boost nationwide demand for Indian teas.
