India’s soybean meal exports have witnessed a sharp decline, reflecting a combination of weak global demand, pricing challenges, and domestic policy constraints. Industry experts warn that the downturn could impact oilseed farmers, processors, and export-oriented crushing units if corrective measures are not taken in the near term.
Soybean meal, a key protein-rich ingredient used in animal feed across global markets, has traditionally been one of India’s major agri-exports. However, exporters are facing intense competition from South American suppliers, particularly Brazil and Argentina, which continue to offer soybean meal at more competitive prices due to higher production and better logistics.
Trade sources indicate that subdued demand from key markets such as Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East has further weighed on export volumes. Higher freight costs, currency volatility, and inconsistent export policies have added to the pressure, reducing India’s competitiveness in the global market.
Domestically, fluctuating soybean prices and concerns over raw material availability have impacted crushing margins, prompting several processors to operate below capacity. The industry has also raised concerns over export restrictions and regulatory uncertainties, which they say have disrupted long-term contracts and buyer confidence.
Industry bodies have urged the government to review export policies and provide stability to encourage overseas shipments. Suggestions include easing procedural bottlenecks, ensuring predictable trade policies, and supporting exporters through logistics and freight incentives. Stakeholders believe such steps are essential to revive exports and protect farmer incomes.
Analysts note that soybean meal exports play a crucial role in absorbing surplus soybean production and stabilising domestic prices. A prolonged slump could lead to stock build-ups and pressure on farm gate prices, particularly in major producing states such as Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
With global demand expected to remain volatile in the near term, industry participants are closely watching policy signals and market trends. A coordinated approach involving farmers, processors, exporters, and policymakers will be key to restoring India’s position in the global soybean meal trade.
