The spike in orders for sweets during the ongoing festivals prove that a strong appetite for cultural traditions and celebrations remain stronger than ever. They also reinforce the structural shift towards on-demand convenience during festivities, as technology continues to enable seamless celebrations.

Swiggy shared it delivered 103,380 Modak orders on Ganesh Chaturthi (September 14, 2026), the first day of Ganesh Utsav. This marked a 13.3 percent increase from last year, with demand being heavily concentrated between 7am and 11am, averaging 11,500 orders per hour.

Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune dominated the orders for Modaks amongst metros, while Nashik, Jodhpur, and Patna dominated demand from emerging markets. Consumers favoured traditional Modak varieties with Mawa Modak (averaging 185 orders per hour), Ukadiche Modak, Kara Kozhukattai, and Kesar Modak emerging as top picks.

Maharashtra celebrated the festival with high octane fervour, accounting for 41 percent of all Modak orders nationwide, with Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik and Amravati leading the charts. The top 5 highest-value Modak orders nationally came from Mumbai, including a massive order worth Rs 29,693 from a single customer for an assortment of 144 Modaks.

Further elaborating on the festive season, Swiggy also shared a significant rise in orders on its platform, especially for Indian traditional sweets, as the festive season came alive with Janmashtami and Raksha Bandhan.

Traditional sweets and mithais continued to take centre stage as demand grew 33 percent compared to Janmashtmi last year, with Kaju Katli, Milk Cake and Mathura Peda ruling the charts. Orders for sweets were 74.5 percent higher on Janmashtami vs the day before and 60.1 percent higher vs the next day reiterating the love for sweets on festival days. This surge was more pronounced in Kolkata, Jaipur, Noida, Patna and Guwahati- consistent with strong regional mithai culture around Janmashtami.

Peda stood out as a festival-favourite with a 4x jump in orders vs the previous day, and demand for Mathura Peda on Janmashtami (September 4, 2026) spiked 46.4 percent as compared to Janmasthmi last year. Orders for Kalakand (220 percent), Shrikhand (213 percent), Ladoos, Sandesh, Burfi and Kheer also witnessed huge spikes on Janmashtami vs previous day, consistent with milk-based sweets being traditionally offered on the festival.

Sweets’ orders on the platform jumped 22.8 percent compared to last year, averaging over 11,500 orders per hour and peaking between 10-11 am as India prepared for the Raksha Bandhan celebrations.
