The FSSAI has written to state food safety departments to launch 'special drives' to check adulteration of sweets, savouries, milk and milk products like ghee, khoya and paneer during the upcoming festive season.
The food regulator has asked the states to treat the matter as 'most important'.
During the festive season in the country, the demand for sweets, savouries, milk and milk products like ghee, khoya and paneer increases and as a result of which the economic motivation to adulterate such products to meet the rising demands of the consumer also increases.
"In such a scenario, the preventive actions including carrying out special surveillance /enforcement drives by the Food Safety Officers / Designated Officers especially at hot spots of such practices under their respective jurisdictions can be an effective tool to curb such practices while ensuring safety of such products," reads the statement issued by the FSSAI.
The FSSAI has asked the states to keep a strict vigil on the manufacturing and sale of all the such food products used in festivities.
The food regulator has also asked the state officials to use mobile food testing labs for the purpose of testing and analysis, wherever available.
"Ensure that such products are safe to consume and are strictly as per the respective food products standards. The matter may be treated as 'most important'," reads FSSAI letter to state Food Safety Commissioners.
