Sugarcane production in Maharashtra has been affected this season due to erratic climatic conditions and experts claim that the overall loss could reach Rs. 16,000 crore.
Shankar Thakkar, national secretary, CAIT, has said that the early temperature rise started from January 2024 in Maharashtra when the sowing season started in February. The situation worsened with heavy rainfall, which resulted in decrease in the sugarcane acreage and growth of the crop. The production of sugarcane is likely to get impacted in the coming harvest season.
For the year 2024-25, the harvest is expected to be 847.79 metric tonne worth Rs. 21,043 crore against the harvest of 1073.08 metric tonne worth Rs. 36,758 crore in 2023-24.
"The rain started from the beginning of June 2024, but due to continuous heavy rains in between for more than four months, the growth of sugarcane was stopped. Since the area under sugarcane was already less and the area was not increased enough, a huge reduction in weight was observed. The overall loss for the season could cross Rs.16,000 crore" said Thakkar.
Thakkar added that due to erratic rains, places like Solapur and Dharashiv districts have suffered the most damage to sugarcane production.
"Due to the fall in production, sugarcane producers, sugarcane harvesting systems and sugar mills in the state have been severely affected along with sugarcane farmers," said Thakkar.
