Tea production, exports this year likely to surpass 2024 levels

India’s tea industry is poised for a strong performance this year, with both production and exports expected to surpass 2024 figures, supported by favourable weather conditions, steady domestic demand, and improved global market sentiment. Industry stakeholders indicate that higher crop yields and better price realisation are contributing to renewed optimism across key tea-growing regions.

Major producing states such as Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have reported stable to improved output during the current season. Adequate rainfall, timely agricultural practices, and increased adoption of modern cultivation and plucking techniques have helped plantations maintain quality while improving overall volumes. Small tea growers, who account for a growing share of national production, are also expected to play a significant role in boosting output.

On the export front, Indian tea shipments are witnessing positive traction, driven by demand from traditional markets in Russia, CIS countries, West Asia and the UK, along with emerging interest from newer destinations. Exporters point out that competitive pricing, improved quality parameters and diversification into specialty teas such as orthodox, green and value-added blends are strengthening India’s global positioning.

The depreciation of the rupee against key currencies has further supported export competitiveness, while ongoing efforts to promote Indian tea through international trade fairs and buyer–seller meets are yielding results. Industry bodies believe that continued focus on branding and compliance with international quality standards will help sustain export momentum.

Domestic consumption, which accounts for a significant share of India’s tea offtake, remains robust. Rising urban demand, premiumisation trends, and the growing popularity of wellness-oriented and specialty teas are supporting overall market growth.

With stable production outlook, improving export demand and supportive market dynamics, the tea industry is expected to close the year on a stronger note than 2024. However, stakeholders continue to emphasise the need for long-term sustainability measures, including climate-resilient practices and cost management, to ensure consistent growth in the years ahead.
