Abhitash Singh, Mumbai
In a robust effort to strengthen food safety and hygiene practices across Hyderabad, the Telangana food safety department successfully organised FSSAI registration and licensing camps at 14 of the city’s busiest vegetable markets on Tuesday. The initiative saw 926 vegetable vendors submit applications seeking Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) registration or licences, marking a significant step towards safer food distribution and sanitation in local markets.

The camps were conducted under the directive of the Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, with the twin aims of streamlining the FSSAI registration process and educating vendors on essential food hygiene norms. Market participants were briefed on cleanliness standards, safe handling of produce, and the importance of compliant food operations — all critical components in reducing risks to public health.

Dr. S. Satyanarayana, Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana said, “This initiative is not just about paperwork it’s about safeguarding public health, instilling best practices among vendors, and building consumer confidence in the food we eat. We are committed to ensuring that every food seller in Hyderabad understands and follows the standards that protect their customers.”

The registration camps were strategically set up at key vegetable markets including Kushaiguda, Uppal, Saroornagar Rythu Bazar, NTR Nagar, Vanasthalipuram, Madannapet, Mir Alam Mandi, Lingampally, Erragadda, Owaisi Market, Gudimalkapur, Monda, Mettuguda and the JNTU Rythu Bazar. Vendors who were unable to complete registrations during the first round will have another opportunity to do so a second phase of camps is scheduled for 30 December at the same locations.

The department reiterated its ongoing commitment to boosting market-level food safety standards and supporting vendors through awareness and compliance drives, reinforcing that such efforts are central to public health protection and consumer trust.
