Tetra Pak Processing Equipment SIA has announced the acquisition of Latvia-based Bioreactors.net, a specialist in designing and manufacturing bioreactor systems for nearly three decades. The move marks a significant expansion of Tetra Pak’s capabilities in the fast-growing New Food sector, particularly in precision and biomass fermentation technologies that are shaping the future of sustainable food production.
Founded in 1996, Bioreactors.net has built a strong reputation in delivering advanced fermentation systems for a wide range of applications—from laboratory-scale R&D and pilot units to fully commercial production facilities. Its bioreactors support the creation of alternative proteins and other next-generation food ingredients, making the company a key enabler of innovation in the New Food landscape. As part of the acquisition, around 15 employees from Bioreactors.net will join Tetra Pak.
Tetra Pak said the acquisition directly strengthens its processing know-how and enhances its equipment and design portfolio for New Food applications. The addition of Bioreactors.net’s technology will allow the company to offer more integrated and sophisticated production systems to both start-ups and established food manufacturers looking to scale precision fermentation-based foods.
Rafael Barros, Director of the New Food Business Stream at Tetra Pak, said the acquisition significantly bolsters their upstream and downstream processing solutions. “The addition of Bioreactors.net complements our existing portfolio with fermentation capabilities. Together, we will deploy their full portfolio of bioreactor solutions under the Tetra Pak brand, enabling us to accelerate the development of next-generation bioreactors and support sustainable scaling for producers,” he said.
Janis Misins-Jubels, Head of Manufacturing at Bioreactors.net, called the move a major milestone. He noted that combining their deep expertise with Tetra Pak’s global reach will fast-track the delivery of world-class fermentation technologies to customers worldwide.
With biotechnology expected to play a central role in feeding a growing global population, fermentation and bioprocessing technologies are increasingly seen as essential tools for building circular, resilient food systems. The acquisition aligns with Tetra Pak’s broader investments in the New Food category, including the New Food Technology Development Centre opened in Karlshamn, Sweden, earlier this year and the Biotech Heights innovation hub launched in partnership with Lund University in 2023.
