President of India Ram Nath Kovind has assigned the charge of Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) to Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar after Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the Union Cabinet.
The President, on advice by the Prime Minister, has made the decision, says an official communiqué from the President’s Office.
Badal had resigned in protest against the passing of farm bills by Lok Sabha, including the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2020 and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement.
Interestingly, the MoFPI welcomed the passing of “The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2020 and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement by GoI and said that these bills will be a game-changer for Indian farmers, the farming community & the processing industry.
These legislations, which are aimed at the transformation of the agriculture and farming sector, provide an ecosystem where farmers and traders would have freedom of buying and selling of their agri-produce across the nation.
Further, It also facilitates remunerative prices through alternative trading channels, promotes efficient and barrier-free inter'/intrastate trade and commerce of farmers' agri-produce, with a facilitative framework for e-trading, according to MoFPI.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the farmers should not get distracted by actions of some people as the Union Government assures them that the provisions of MSP and government buying of agri produce will remain in its place. The two farm legislations actually give many other options to the farmers to sell their produce.
He added that the new farm legislations would help farmers in selling their farm produce, which help them in making profit and Indian farm sector will also get investment in newer technology.
