In a major global recognition for sustainable agriculture, UPL has won the prestigious SBCOP Award in the food systems category at COP30, held in Belém, Brazil. The award honours the company’s low-methane rice project, which aims to significantly reduce methane emissions — one of the most potent greenhouse gases — from rice cultivation across several regions.
The accolade is part of the Sustainable Business COP (SBCOP) initiative, a global programme led by Brazil’s National Confederation of Industry (CNI), designed to elevate private sector participation in climate discussions at COP30 and future global summits.
Celebrating the achievement, Jai Shroff, chairman & group CEO, UPL Group, said the award underscores UPL’s commitment to climate-smart agriculture. “This recognition highlights initiatives that support sustainable food production and climate resilience. Our low-methane rice project empowers farmers with science-based practices that enhance productivity while reducing environmental impact. It strengthens our mission to build a more climate-friendly pathway for global agriculture,” he said.
UPL’s award-winning project works on developing and cultivating low-methane rice varieties, along with deploying advanced agritech solutions to curb emissions during rice production — a sector known to contribute significantly to methane release. The programme is closely aligned with UPL’s global #AFarmerCan initiative, which equips farmers with tools, training and sustainable methods to handle the challenges posed by climate change.
According to Ricardo Mussa, chairman of SBCOP, the award followed an extremely competitive selection process. “We received more than 1,400 projects from over 600 companies worldwide. Of these, 670 were shortlisted for their impact potential and scalability. Selecting 48 winning cases was rigorous, and UPL earned its place among them,” he said.
SBCOP Awards recognise projects that combine climate action, economic value, scalability and replicability. UPL’s win reinforces its growing role in driving climate-smart solutions that deliver environmental benefits, strengthen farmer resilience and create long-term sustainable value.
