The Uttarakhand State Government has finalised plans to export 20 tonnes of Rainbow Trout to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). This marks the State’s first entry into the international seafood market for cold-water fisheries.
The decision follows a successful demonstration of Uttarakhand’s trout at the Gulfood 2026 exhibition held in Dubai this January. Following the event, international buyers and investors expressed significant interest in the quality of fish raised in the Himalayan streams.
The Uttarakhand Fisheries Department is currently in the process of securing the necessary food safety and quality certifications required for international trade.
As per reports, the Fisheries Department has set a target of 20 tonnes export in the initial phase at ?400 and ?600 per kg, wherein the first phase is expected to generate approximately ?1 crore for local fish farmers. And the first shipment is expected to be dispatched within the next few months following the completion of licensing and processing protocols.
Trout farming in Uttarakhand is primarily centred in high-altitude districts, including Pithoragarh, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Bageshwar. These regions utilise glacial meltwater, which is essential for the growth of high-quality trout.
Currently, the State produces roughly 710 metric tonnes of trout annually across 1,625 raceways and the state government recently launched the ?170 crore Trout Promotion Scheme to further modernise facilities and increase yield.
Until now, a major portion of the production (approximately 30 tonnes over the last 15 months) was supplied to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
