Westfalia Fruit advances ‘Whole Tree’ strategy to drive zero-waste innovation in Avocado supply chain

Westfalia Fruit is strengthening its commitment to sustainability and innovation through its pioneering ‘Whole Tree’ approach, aimed at maximising value from every part of the avocado tree while minimising waste across the supply chain.

At a time when the fresh produce industry faces mounting challenges from climate volatility, supply chain disruptions and rising operational costs, the company’s holistic strategy is designed to build resilience and efficiency. By ensuring full crop utilisation, Westfalia Fruit is unlocking new commercial opportunities while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

Operating across the entire avocado category, the company supplies fresh whole fruit in multiple quality tiers — good, better, best and organic — alongside a diverse portfolio of value-added products. These include guacamole, smashed avocado, pulp, oil, dried, frozen and IQF formats. Fruit that does not meet fresh retail specifications is redirected into high-value processing streams, ensuring consistent utilisation and reducing unnecessary waste.

Building on more than seven years of dedicated research and development, Westfalia Fruit is progressing towards its zero-waste, total crop use ambition. Innovative workstreams are focused on transforming avocado by-products such as skins and stones into commercially viable materials. Applications under development include cosmetic ingredients, natural pigment extracts and colourants, as well as fibre and starch extraction for sustainable packaging solutions.

The company is now working towards a fully integrated extraction process that captures valuable compounds from what would traditionally be treated as low-value waste, such as compost or anaerobic digestion material. By adopting a full-crop, circular approach, Westfalia Fruit aims to deliver minimal waste, maximum efficiency and integrated category solutions that benefit growers, customers and consumers alike.

With further projects under evaluation, the company continues to reinforce its position as a leader in circular agriculture and supply chain innovation.
