Westfalia Fruit, a global leader in the avocado industry, is set to spotlight its premium GEM Gourmet Avocado at Fruit Logistica 2026, underlining its strong focus on quality-led innovation and long-term category growth in the global avocado market.
Westfalia Fruit will offer visitors an immersive GEM experience through live tastings and dedicated displays. The showcase aims to highlight the variety’s superior taste, creamy texture and consistent eating quality. Retailers and category managers will also have the opportunity to explore ranging and premiumisation strategies with the Westfalia Fruit team during the event.
With avocado consumption continuing to rise globally, consumers are increasingly prioritising reliability and eating quality. According to market insights, over 80 percent of shoppers actively seek consistent quality, while more than 60 percent are willing to pay a premium for better taste, creating favourable conditions for gourmet varieties such as GEM.
Developed by Westfalia Fruit, GEM is a proprietary avocado variety designed to deliver a richer, smoother and more indulgent eating experience compared to standard Hass-type avocados. Its fuller flavour profile and dependable performance position it as an ideal premium and special-occasion fruit.
Retail performance data further reinforces GEM’s category-building potential. Nearly 40 percent of GEM shoppers are new to the avocado category, while around 80 percent of sales are incremental, rather than replacing existing purchases. Additionally, 30 percent of current shoppers trade up to premium, with GEM supporting a price premium of 50–60 percent.
Looking ahead, Westfalia Fruit plans to expand GEM into new markets by harmonising branded packaging, aligning specifications across origins and strengthening consistency worldwide.
“GEM is more than an avocado—it is a premium experience that elevates the category,” said Wim Destoop, global chief customer officer at Westfalia Fruit, adding that the brand helps retailers unlock value while offering consumers a genuinely distinctive product.
