The Department of Livestock (DoL), Bhutan, and Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) together, have decided to lift the ban on the import of poultry products from India. However, the authorities have asked people to monitor the outbreak of swine flu in the country.
The outbreak of avian flu in Assam and West Bengal in November had prompted the ban of poultry and its products since December 2008 in Bhutan.
According to a DoL statement, "The decision was made in view of improvement in overall bird flu outbreak situation in India and that there is minimal risk."
However, the condition for the imports as applied by the DoL lays that only frozen chicken and eggs by land transport via West Bengal and Assam can be imported from approved firms.
All shipment are to be brought in sealed containers and should be opened only at the entry points in the presence of BAFRA inspectors.
BAFRA reports highlight that Bhutan imported 99.8 mt of processed chicken and 29,971 cartons of eggs from India in 2007. With cases of swine flu or H1N1 influenza increasing and spreading worldwide, the Ministry of Health has asked authorities to coordinate preventive and response measures to the possible entrance and outbreak of the flu in Bhutan.
