The Government of the Russian Federation has authorised nine Indian laboratories for certification of the batches of rice grains, sesame and peanuts.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, nine Indian laboratories namely Insecticide Residue Testing Laboratory, Geo-Chem Laboratories Private Limited, Reliable Analytical Laboratories, Insecticide Residue Testing Laboratory, Arbro Pharmaceuticals Limited, Shriram Institute for Industrial Research (Delhi), Shriram Institute for Industrial Research (territorial administrations of Rosselkhoznadzor), for inspection while certifying the batches of rice grains, sesame and peanuts.
The Federal Service on Veterinary and Phytosanitary, under the Government of Russian Federation, has also recognised the said authorisation of the head of territorial administrations of Rosselkhoznadzor.
The disintegration of the soviet union in the early 1990s saw a decline in the bilateral trade between India and Russia, including Indian agro exports to Russia.
A decline from 2.7% during 1997-98 to 0.7% in 2004-05 has been seen in the Indian exports to Russia in comparison to India's global export.
Recently, India and Russia have tried to increase their bilateral trade and have even signed an agreement to increase it to $ 10 billion by 2010.
India exports around 50,000 tonnes of rice to Russia every year. In 2007, Russia banned the import of Indian rice for it was found to contain alfatoxin, which can be harmful for the body. This came as a major blow to Indian agro exports to Russia.
But the recent move by the Government of Russian Federation to allow import of Indian agro products, especially rice, will give boost to Indian agro products export, said one of the exporters.
