New standards for water under way

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will soon develop norms to get water, as an ingredient and finished product, under its purview. FSSAI is developing comprehensive standards for water.

All aspects related to water like risk assessment, analysis and management would be studied before developing the norms, a FSSAI representative told F&B News.

Though the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act has already defined standards for water, the standards are limited to packaged water, and potable water and water as an ingredient do not fall in it.

According to P I Suvrathan, chairperson, FSSAI, all-encompassing standards for water is a must since 80 per cent of contamination in food occurs due to water. The Authority would work with a variety of businesses to enforce these standards and ensure contamination is reduced significantly.

According to Ramesh Chauhan, chairman and managing director, Bisleri, the resulting standards would not affect Bisleri much, as the company is already following the best global standards prescribed by European standards and approved under PFA Act (Prevention of Food Adulteration Act).

The Authority has already set up a scientific panel on contaminants in the food chain that would set standards for water as a raw material and as a finished product. The panel would review the existing standards for packaging water in the country and include natural resources water sector as well.

The proposed review of the packaged water segment would now aim to include the businesses coming up in the unorganised vertical like the flavoured water category. The FSSAI has reinstated that packaged water companies, whether branded or not (pouch based manufacturers), would come under the purview of the new standards. The natural resource water (mineral) businesses will also come under the purview of the new standards.
