The Gujarat Food & Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) is expected to start operations of its new food and drug testing laboratory by end of this year.

Work on the new facility, which is being built in Siddhapur in the northern part of Gujarat, with an investment of approximately Rs 55 crore is almost over. Around Rs 5 crore have been used to build the food wing. FDCA will be starting the operation of the food testing lab within this year and the drugs wing a few months later.

Dr H G Koshia, commissioner, Gujarat FDCA, said, “When it comes to drug testing it is more complex and technically difficult than the procedure involved in testing food.”

At present there are three testing laboratories in the state, two dedicated food testing laboratories in Rajkot and Bhuj respectively and one state-of-the-art food and drug testing laboratory at Baroda. This will be the second food and drug testing combination lab that the Gujarat state will be having for the dual purpose of testing food and drug samples from across the state.
