Ferrero India, one of the confectionery major’s three Ferrero Social Enterprises, opened the Pietro Ferrero Kindergarden, a child care centre, about 100m from its production plant in Baramati. The company also launched Kinder+Sport, an educational programme aimed at promoting active lifestyles (especially among children), at Vidya Prathistan School (also in Baramati).

The former, named after the company’s ex-chief executive officer, was inaugurated by Member of Parliament Supriya Sule, in the presence of Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar. Ferrero India’s management and employees, and other guests attended the inauguration. The latter is one of the four pillars of Ferrero’s corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The Kindergarden was one of the social service initiatives taken by Pietro Ferrero, the force behind the Ferrero Social Enterprises. Its motto is United Kinder of the World, and its objective is to safeguard the health, education and social development of children. It has been constructed on a two-acre plot, and has a built-up area of about 10,000sq ft and space for children to play.

It would be a home away from home for the wards of the company’s female employees and the children who live in the nearby community. Those aged between three months and six years would be enrolled in it, and their food, personal hygiene, health care, early childhood education, play and development of social skills would be taken care of.

The building is made of modular concentric units, equipped with green spaces, both inside and outside the grounds. This configuration would enable the expansion of the facility in the future, if necessary, with the addition of similar architectural structures. Luigi Oddone, managing director, Ferrero India, said CSR had been at the group’s core since its inception.

“This initiative is a part of our social enterprise initiatives. Our focus is on building sustainable communities by providing employment opportunities, providing skills training for our employees and supporting initiatives that promote good health care and education for the children in the communities we operate in,” he added.

“Through the Pietro Ferrero Kindergarden and Kinder+Sport, we plan to strengthen the link between the company and the local community,” Oddone said. Inder Chopra, secretary general, Ferrero India, said, “We plan to continue our CSR mission to implement projects and initiatives promotion children’s health and education in the local community in Baramati.”

“We are also pleased to bring Kinder+ Sport to India, where we would develop sports and physical education activities, aimed at creating a generation that grows up well and has an active lifestyle. This would be primarily achieved through partnerships with national sports federations, institutions and local schools in India,” he added.
