Food processing industries minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal inaugurated a mega international food park in Dabwala Kalan in Punjab’s Fazilka District, in the presence of Sukhbir Singh Badal, deputy chief minister of the state. The outlay of the 55-acre park (the fourth in India) was Rs 136 crore, and it would have facilities for the processing milk and milk products and the packaging of fruit and vegetables.

That was her clarion call to companies to establish more food processing units to reduce food wastage across the country, which amounts to Rs 45,000 crore. Lauding the park’s promoters for providing 700-plus jobs to the local youth and adding that more youngsters would be employed at the facility, she said, “This is just the beginning. The ministry has succeeded in promoting an international food park by giving a subsidy of Rs 50 crore.”

The minister stated that more food parks and food parks would be established across Punjab in the coming days, adding that ITC was planning to set up a Rs 1,000-crore food park in Kapurthala, and they were promoting the establishment of a cold chain (for which a Rs 10-crore subsidy was being granted) and the creation of modern milk, fruit and vegetable processing centres.

Harsimrat Kaur Badal urged farmers to add value to their crops and form small self-help groups (SHG) for the purpose. She made a case for diversifying from paddy cultivation and stated that the need of the hour was to add value to fruit and vegetables grown in Punjab. Sukhbir Singh Badal said diversification would become a reality once more food parks, such as the one coming up in Kapurthala, were created.
