fiogf49gjkf0d McDonald’s is now gearing up to highlight the importance of having breakfast intended to highlight most households looking to skip this meal. The quick service food chain now will observe the National Breakfast Day on March 9, 2015. It will give away free McMuffins to those visiting the restaurant during breakfast hours.
It was McDonald’s which instituted the National Breakfast Day globally and in India to reiterate the importance of breakfast and inculcate in customers the awareness and need of starting their day on a healthy note. This year, National Breakfast Day will be observed on March 9, 2015, across the country.
The quick service food major went on to highlight the need for breakfast after a recent survey conducted by Research Centre, College of Home Science, Nirmala Niketan. The sample size of 3,600 in the age group of 8 to 40, covering Sec A and B across metros Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata showed only 3% regard breakfast as an essential meal; 72% do not have adequate breakfast daily; and one in four skips it. Breakfast skipping is common in all four metros. Amongst those who do, ‘breakfast’ is skipped the most, more so across Mumbai (34%) and Chennai (37%).
Further, another study on ‘Breakfast Habits of Urban Indian Consumers’ conducted in Bengaluru and Chennai by Lakshmi Shankar Iyer showed that about 40 out of 135 respondents were seen to skip breakfast sometimes and negligible respondents seemed to skip breakfast always. From the responses it was also found that 90 of 135 respondents had the habit of having their breakfast outside home.
“McDonald’s recognised this trend early on and in 2010 became the quick service restaurant to launch breakfast in India. We offer customers a dedicated breakfast menu which includes a wide and appetising range of grilled wholesome breakfast products that are perfect for those rushed for time,” stated Ranjit Paliath, vice-president, business operations, Hardcastle Restaurants, McDonald’s India: West and South India.
