Knowledge Hub on Omega-3, the highlight at Vitafoods Europe 19th essay

The European market for nutraceuticals continues to remain promising, growing parallel with food and pharmaceutical industry in Europe. The industry, not very old to Europe, has witnessed a plethora of products - functional foods, dietary supplements, nutricosmetics, pharmaceuticals, health foods, naturals & herbals, functional beverages - being introduced in the market.

With consumer preferring to eat in a healthy way and opting for these preventive health products, the global nutraceuticals product market is expected to reach $204.8 billion by 2017, growing at a CAGR of 6.3%, with North America and Asia-Pacific (including Japan) expected to have the largest market share within this sector.

Consistent results
Giving a strong foundation to this ever-growing market is the event Vitafoods Europe. The only event focussed in the world and devoted to ingredients and raw materials for the nutraceuticals, dietary supplement and functional food and drink industries. The event in its 19th edition, to be held at Palexpo, Geneva, from May 5-7, 2015, has always had a sharp focus on consistent results for exhibitors and visitors from across the industry.

Chris Lee, portfolio director, Vitafoods Europe, states, “For the year 2015 there are over 14,000 visitors including C level-professionals, product developers, R&D specialists, senior marketers and procurement specialists from food and health supplement manufacturers, distributors, retailers and wholesalers, who will take to the exhibition floor as they look to source the latest ingredients and raw materials from 750 global exhibitors.”

Participants will include representatives from over 40 countries. They would be from companies such as DSM, Lonza, Plantex, FMC, 3i nature, Arla Food Ingredients, Polaris, Gelpell AG and Natac.
Lee elaborates, “Continuing to highlight best practice within research and development in areas such as heart health, healthy ageing, weight management, and women’s health these clinical sessions will be positioned in the broader context of converting excellence in science to profitable business strategies.”

2015 Special Features
Global Market Theatre

At Global Market Theatre, there would be presentations made that would offer an overview of regional markets, regulatory frameworks and the latest innovation in R&D from around the world. In depth sessions present a thorough overview of the key aspects of doing business in six selected regions: Asia, southern Africa, Europe and eastern Europe, Russia, South America, and North America, and a guide on how to get products to market in these regions. Speakers from leading research companies, including Euromonitor International, Mintel, Innova Market Insights and EAS Strategies will offer independent insight and expert assessments on key market trends.

Omega-3 Resource Centre
The Omega-3 Resource Centre is a completely new feature for 2015 co-developed with internationally recognised Omega-3 experts, GOED. The Resource Centre would act as a knowledge hub on Omega-3, presenting a wide breadth of content ranging from expert presentations and infographics, to interactive visual displays. NutraIngredients Awards

In conjunction with the event, the inaugural NutraIngredients Awards in association with Vitafoods Europe, will take place on Wednesday May 6. The awards would be recognising the contributions of excellence and innovation made by European health and nutrition industry’s key players, in seven separate categories, and features a diverse panel of expert judges. Categories include, Readers’ Ingredient of the Year (in association with Vitafoods Europe 2015), Startup Ingredient of the Year and three Finished Product of the Year categories recognising Sport & Energy, Immunity and Heart & Brain products.

With primary focus on innovative ingredients, emerging technologies, and nutritional science, successful applicants are given 10 minutes each to present their business and plans to a qualified audience of strategic and equity investors and development partners for funding, technical support, clinical trials and commercialisation. Finished product companies are also invited to apply.

Following the successful launch of the European Investor Meeting in 2014, NCN will once again be leading this valuable networking event on Monday May 4, the day before the exhibition, as part of Vitafoods Europe.

Innovation Pavilion
There is also new entrepreneurial businesses and startups are represented in the Innovation Pavilion, where visitors can discover new ingredients, products and technologies, and take advantage of the latest trends the industry has to offer. Whilst Innovation Tours, in association with NutriMarketing will take visitors around the exhibition on category focussed trails to visit carefully selected exhibitors offering the latest advancements in nutraceuticals, allowing them to see practical product demonstrations. These tours will focus on new protein sources, innovation in sports nutrition, innovative ways to enhance bioavailability and new strategies in health claim applications.

Exhibitor Information
The 2015 show has attracted a host of new organisations including Tasa Omega, Vespa Ingredients and Nutralab Canada. Senior decision-makers from across all sectors of the nutraceutical and dietary supplements industries are expected to be at the show.

The Tasting Bar
It enables visitors to sample and compare a selection of the latest functional food and beverage products on show at Finished Products Europe. The Vitafoods Europe Conference also returns in a brand new expanded format, with an added focus on business best practice and more content than ever before. The conference content is divided into three streams, each with a distinct focus and direction. The first, ‘Your Business,’ looks at how to turn business intelligence into insights and competitive growth strategies. Within this stream, discussing EFSA claims and regulatory issues, Karin Verjijden, attorney at law, Axon Lawyers, takes to the stage to look at the status quo of Novel Foods in the EU under the new regulation. Peter Wennström from The HealthyMarketing Team will show how nutrition information and labelling really influences consumer’s choice, and Nick Henson from the International Food Network will present an EU-funded model approach for the submissions of health claims within the EU.

For latest innovations in research and development across a number of specific health categories, the ‘Your Science’ stream covers areas such as digestive health, women’s health, cognitive health, weight management, heart health, sport nutrition and bone & joint health. Within bone & joint health, Prof. Robert Thomas, senior clinical tutor, Cambridge University, discusses polyphenol-rich nutraceuticals to improve arthralgia, quality of life and physical activity levels in cancer survivors. In addition, within weight management, Massimo Marzorati, co-founder of ProDigest, will present latest results from a five-year, EU-funded project on satiating properties of food.

Finally the ‘Your Product’ stream focusses on the latest product and ingredient innovations in areas such as Omega-3, probiotics, protein, and products, botanicals and best practice within product safety and quality control, each topic combined with a market overview and consumer insights. Within botanicals, Joris Geleen, botanicals legislation expert at the Belgium Federal Public Service, Belgium Department of Health, and Project Lead for the Belfrit project discusses the progress made on harmonising standards and European regulatory framework around botanicals and latest developments around the adoption and recognition of the Belfrit list.

Taking place on Wednesday  May 6, participants have the opportunity to join like-minded industry personnel for an invigorating run before the show, where they will also receive a complimentary Ingredia Nutritional finished sports recovery product.
