CAIT writes to Goyal for strict action against Amazon, Flipkart and others
Tuesday, 17 September, 2024, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
Traders body CAIT has written to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to take strict action against e-commerce giants Amazon & Flipkart and others, following adverse CCI findings.

The BJP MP from Chandni Chowk and secretary general emeritus of Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) Praveen Khandelwal termed the CCI investigation report as a historic case in global regulatory affairs as both Flipkart and Amazon were found acting in violation of Anti-Trust Laws.

Khandelwal in a communication sent to  Goyal has called for his immediate intervention and necessary action into the matter to protect domestic retailers.

He has urged the Minister for immediate implementation of e-commerce rules under the Consumer Protection Act and the introduction of a comprehensive e-commerce policy.

He has asked for prompt action against the brands named in the CCI report and also suspension of business operations for Amazon, Flipkart, their associates and the brands allegedly colluding with them.

Referring to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) report regarding Flipkart and Amazon, Khandelwal said that it has exposed severe anti-competitive practices such as preferential treatment of sellers, deep discounting, and collusion with major brands.

"These activities have significantly harmed domestic traders and created an uneven playing field. The findings substantiate Goyal’s earlier statements expressing displeasure over the business practices of foreign e-commerce companies in India. This evidence clearly demonstrates that these companies are undermining Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of empowering domestic trade," said Khandelwal.

He has also sought direction to the CCI to take legal action without delay against all offenders.
