Railways created 611 Base Kitchens to supply food on-board, Parliament told

Railways have created 611 Base Kitchens to supply food to on-board passengers.
According to the Railway Ministry, commissioning of modern Base Kitchens at identified locations is going on and as on December 7, 2024, a total of 611 Base Kitchens have been commissioned for supply of meals.
The Railway Ministry have told Parliament that each catering unit is required to get a FSSAI certification from the designated officer for ensuring compliance.
The Indian Railways have claimed that it has taken several measures to improve catering services.
This include CCTV installation in all the Base Kitchens, quality control on procurement of raw materials, food safety supervisors at kitchens and on trains, fortnight cleaning & pest control schedule for Base Kitchens, regular sampling and third-party audit of pantry cars & Base Kitchen is also undertaken by the railway management.
Ashwani Vaishnav, Railway Minister, said, “Regular and surprise inspections are carried out by the officials of Indian Railways and IRCTC in trains and stations to check and ensure that catering services are provided as per laid down standards. It is also ensured that food items are sold at notified tariff. In addition, special Inspection Drives are also carried out with focus on aspects such as quality, price, etc. Prompt and appropriate punitive action, including imposition of fines, disciplinary action, counselling, warning etc., is taken in case of catering related complaints.”
