States told to test prohibited substances declared by WADA for 'Food for Sportsperson'

The FSSAI has asked the states to test prohibited substances declared by World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for 'Food for Sportsperson' under FSSAI licence.

And, for the purpose, FSSAI has notified 'Centre of Excellence for Research and Analysis of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, National Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, with the scope of accreditation 'Chemical`.

"The enforcement authorities may utilise the aforementioned notified laboratory for testing of 'Food for Sportsperson' with FSSAI licence for prohibited substances declared by WADA (as per existing scope & accreditation of the laboratory), as and when required. The scope and accreditation of the laboratory including any updation may be seen from NABL Website," reads a statement issued by the FSSAI.


The current scope of accreditation by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for the said laboratory covers testing of prohibited substances (currently 76) declared by WADA under the discipline 'Chemical-Nutritional Supplement'.

FSSAI through regulation (8) of FSS (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016, has laid down provisions for 'Food for Sportsperson (under category Food for Special Dietary Use), which states "Prohibited substances declared by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) shall not be added in any of the articles of food specified for sportspersons. Food business operator must ensure to check the list of prohibited substances which is published annually by the World Anti-Doping Agency and is effective from the January 1 every year".
